The New Bond: A soft analysis

Having read many articles about the potential new James Bond, I think that most of them simply suggest names of actors that the editors like. Our goal is to diminish this lack of justification and to reach to a guessing conclusion using some criteria and facts. Our brief analysis will result in two options based on the following points.

The Profile of the previous James Bond

Chester-born Daniel Craig wasn’t a well-known actor before James Bond. He had played in some productions such as “Tomb Raider” and “Road to Perdition”, but he surely wasn’t a top star. The film that totally boosted his career was “Layer Cake” (2004). After two year “Casino Royale” was released. Craig was 38 years old. Then he made another 4 movies. The fourth (“Spectre”) was supposed to be his last one, but he eventually returned for “No Time to Die”, possibly because his successor had not been found. By the time, “No Time to Die” filming was finished on 2020, Daniel Craig was 52.

Age Criterion

That’s why many of the predictions of the new Bond cannot be taken seriously. For example, the majority of articles suggest Idris Elba as one of the main contenders. Idris Elba is 49 years old. I don’t think that the studio will produce movies with him or with any actor of his generation, because the actor will be over 60 in case he made four or more Bond movies. This means that the new Bond should be under 40.

Ethnicity/Genre Change

There are articles that suggest that the new 007 will be of a different ethnicity or genre. I think that the studio will choose in a more traditional way, as the audience has connected James Bond with a certain figure.

The first choice: the logical one

The truth is that I had two actors on my mind for the logical choice: Sam Calfin and Richard Madden. Between the two Madden seems closer to the Bond’s profile. The 35-year old Scottish is well-known actor but he isn’t a top star yet. His body shape is very close to the predecessor (same height) and he has played action-dramatic role such as Robb Stark in “Game of Thrones” or David Budd in “Bodyguard”. Daniel Craig left his stamp portraying a darker James Bond, so Madden’s profile fits. For all these reasons, it’s not a surprise that he is considered as one of the main contenders for the role. The only disadvantage I am finding is his participation in the Marvel Universe that can cause potential schedule conflicts.

The surprise choice

I’m proud to present this choice, because I haven’t read anywhere his name, but I really think that Aidan Turner could be the new James Bond. The 38-year old Irish actor is also very close to the Craig’s Bond profile. Nevertheless, except of more dramatic roles (“Poldark”), he has played comedy roles (Hobbit movies) as well, so he can fit in a lighter version of Bond. The main disadvantage of this choice is that maybe the studio wants a stronger name for the new series. “Poldark” had a great succes in United Kingdom, but it’s not a well-known TV series worldwide.

In the end

In the end, it might be useless to predict the new Bond. The most important thing is “great films to be created”. In the beginning, Daniel Craig was considered as a strange choice, but he was surely the actor that led the role to another level.
