The Fifth Step: Lowden & Freeman in the West End
From the National Theatre of Scotland and alongside Sean Gilder, Jack Lowden (Slow Horses, Dunkirk) will now share the stage with Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, Sherlock) at @sohoplace in the West End. Directed intimately in-the-round by Finn den Hertog, “The Fifth Step” is a bold, thought-provoking, and darkly humorous new play by David Ireland.
Plot
The movie is inspired by the 12 Steps of Rehabilitation:
Step 1: honesty.
Step 2: faith.
Step 3: surrender.
Step 4: self-examination.
Step 5? After spending years in Alcoholics Anonymous’ 12-step program, James agrees to become the sponsor of newcomer Luka ( Lowden). As they navigate the challenging path to sobriety, they bond over black coffee, share personal stories, and form a fragile friendship rooted in their shared struggles. As Luka approaches Step 5, their conversations take a deeper, more confessional turn—his progress depends on revealing painful secrets that could lead him back to alcohol. However, James, too, harbors dangerous truths from his past—truths that could shake the very foundation of trust both men rely on for their recovery.
When?
The play will run from May 10 to July 26, 2025, and @sohoplace has warmed us up with the following video:
