Irish Awards like Golden Globes
Irish cinema continues to flourish each year. While some productions might not gain widespread recognition, an increasing number of Irish actors and actresses are making their mark as global A-list stars.
This week, the Irish Film and Television Award (IFTA) nominations were announced, showcasing fierce competition in several categories. For instance, the Lead Actor in a TV Series category features an impressive lineup of nominees, including Colin Farrell, Michael Fassbender, Aidan Turner, Andrew Scott, and Ciarán Hinds. This category is particularly intriguing, even more so than similar categories at the Emmys or Golden Globes, which often have pretty much the same nominations.
Among the other talented nominees are Paul Mescal, Jessie Buckley, Saoirse Ronan, Barry Keoghan, Sharon Horgan, Nicola Coughlan, and Liam Cunningham, further highlighting Ireland’s contribution to the global entertainment industry.
On the film side, Keencap has emerged as a standout, earning the most nominations. The story follows a trio of rappers leading a movement to preserve their native Irish language. Another notable contender is Small Things Like These, featuring Cillian Murphy in a gripping narrative about uncovering disturbing secrets hidden by a local convent, which leads him to confront shocking truths about his own life.
Irish cinema and talent are undoubtedly on the rise, capturing the world’s attention with compelling stories and exceptional performances.
Take a look of the full nominations here. Award winners will be announced at the 22nd anniversary IFTA Awards Ceremony taking place on Friday, February 14th, 2025.
