Is The Penguin Lessons the feel-good film of the year? (Trailer)

“The Penguin Lessons” is a movie I have been eagerly waiting to see, and now that the trailer has been released, I feel this movie has something special to offer. Directed by The Full Monty‘s Peter Cattaneo and starring Steve Coogan in the lead role, the film tells the true story of Tom Michell and his time teaching English at an Argentinian boys’ school in 1976.

Expecting an easy ride, Tom instead discovers a complex and divided nation, along with a class of nearly unteachable young boys. When he finds a small penguin washed up on an oil-slicked beach, his life takes an unexpected turn. The penguin becomes not just a cherished friend but also a teacher of life’s most valuable lessons—for Tom, the boys, and many others.

From the trailer, it’s evident that the movie provides an authentic portrayal of Argentinian society in the 1970s. Steve Coogan seems to fit the role perfectly, bringing the character to life with his unique style. Jonathan Pryce also delivers a noteworthy performance as the director of the school.

Despite the challenging and tumultuous time period, the film’s humor adds a lighthearted and feel-good essence. For example, when Coogan’s character is asked, “Why did you save the penguin’s life?” he responds, “I tried to impress a woman I wanted to sleep with.”

The movie was featured at the Toronto Film Festival, but it will take some time before it hits cinemas, with a release date set for April 18, 2025. At least it seems like it will be worth the wait.
