Steve Coogan to Play Dr. Strangelove in Stage Adaptation
Great news for the fans of Steve Coogan, as the actor is set to make a comeback in a stage adaptation of Stanley Kubrick’s iconic 1964 satirical war movie. Kubrick’s film is widely regarded as one of the best comedies of all time and a classic of the Cold War era
The first-ever adaptation of a Kubrick film will see Armando Iannucci (“Veep,” “Death of Stalin”) collaborating with Sean Foley, who will co-direct the production. Furthermore, the filmmaker’s family is actively involved in this adaptation, as they have provided Iannucci with access to Kubrick’s personal archives, which includes unused script ideas and scenes from the original film.
Similar to Peter Sellers’ portrayal in the 1964 movie, Coogan will take on multiple roles in the play. Sellers, in the film, assumed three distinct characters: Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, the fictional President Merkin Muffley, and Dr. Strangelove, the former Nazi who served as Muffley’s scientific advisor. An interesting fan fact is that Sellers was originally set to play a fourth role as Maj. T.J. “King” Kong, but he encountered difficulties in developing a Texas accent. When Sellers broke his ankle, Stanley Kubrick decided to cast another actor who naturally suited the role. We will find out if Coogan will take on a fourth character.
Coogan commented on the new play, stating ‘Dr. Strangelove’ on stage is daunting. A huge responsibility. It’s also an exciting challenge, an opportunity to bring this timeless classic to a new audience. Knowing that I will be part of a creative team led by Sean Foley and Armando Iannucci means I will be working with the best people”.
According to the official Stanley Kubrick account, it was tweeted that “Dr. Strangelove” is scheduled to open at the Noel Coward Theatre on October 8, 2024.
