Yorgos, before Lanthimos
With the Venice Film Festival set to premiere Lanthimos’ new movie “Poor Things“, and the World Basketball Cup about to begin, I thought of sharing the story of Giorgos Lanthimos, the basketball player.

First team appearances
Yorgos Lanthimos’ father was an international basketball player during the 1960s and 1970s and was one of the key members of the Pagkrati team in Athens. Following in his father’s footsteps, Giorgos Lanthimos also became involved actively. Starting from the Pagkrati’s youth academy, he made to the men’s team. He even competed with the men’s team in the 1991/1992 season in the top greek category, with three appearances, due to the strike of professional players. He scored a total of 7 points.
First Steps As Director
Leaving his basketball career behind, we find Lanthimos taking his first steps as a director in the mid-1990, primarily directing music videos for Greek singers. In 2004, he participates in the team responsible for the opening ceremony of the Athens Olympic Games and then begins to shoot the films that made him known to the general public.
More recently due to the premiere of his short film “Bleat” in Greece, Lanthimos spotted in an Eurolegue match along with Emma Stone who starred in the film (main photo of the article from INSIDE).
