Roy (2021) – Short Movie Review

I’m not the biggest short movie fan, so I wanted something special to make my first short movie post. “Roy” wasn’t chosen by chance; I consider David Bradley as one of greatest actors, with roles ranging from drama (“Broadchurch”) to action (“The Strain”). Supplementary, the Oscar winning duo of Rachel Shenton and Chris Overton (for the short film “Silent Child”) is behind of this film.

Plot

Roy (David Bradley), a widowed elderly man, passes the days by looking through the phone book, calling random numbers in hopes of finding some brief moments of companionship. Things take a turn when he unknowingly calls an adult hotline, during which he forges an unlikely friendship with the call girl, Cara (Rachel Shenton), who convinces him to stay on the line by agreeing to talk to him in a non-sexual manner.

How this friendship will end and, most importantly, how much of the emptiness in Roy’s life will be filled. Does only Roy have the need for companionship, or does Cara as well?

“Roy” is emotional and heartwarming, but in a funny and self-deprecatory way. David Bradley’s performance is exceptional and the movie manages to fully unfold the feeling of loneliness in only sixteen minutes.

Movie Rating: 84/100
