A Story from Philomena
Following the release of “The Lost King”, a movie that reunites Philomena’s team; Steve Coogan, Jeff Pope and Stephen Frears, I remembered a story from Steve Coogan’s autobiography. Coogan and Martin Sixsmith, the reporter that publishes Philomena’s story, had visited her during the writing of the screenplay. Steve Coogan refers:
“During one of our visits to see Philomena, Martin and I played her footage of her son, Anthony, running around the flower garden in Ross Abbey when he was five years old. She had never seen it before, and she started crying. She grabbed my hand as I was watching the footage and said, Ί did love him you know.’
I used that line in the film, when Martin and Philomena are at the salad bar and she grabs his hand. What is strange about life imitating art is that it didn’t happen to Martin, it happened to me. And then to me when I was playing Martin.”
Maybe the story isn’t great, but it created to the following scene:
“Easily Distracted”, the autobiography of Steve Coogan was published by Century in 2015.
