Lanthimos Assembles His Cast for the new movie “Poor Things”
Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Williem Dafoe and Ramy Youssef will star in the new movie of Yorgos Lanthimos under the title “Poor Things”. Yorgos will direct and produce the film from a script by Tony McNamara, their second collaboration on “The Favourite” (2018), for which Tony McNamara earned an Oscar nomination for co-writing the screenplay.
“Poor Things” is a Frankenstein-esque tale set in the Victorian-era, described as a story of “love, discovery and scientific daring,” focusing on a young woman named Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) brought back to life by an eccentric but brilliant scientist (Dafoe). However, the revival isn’t the strangest part of the story; Belle is being brought back to life, having the brain of an infant.
Bella is actually Victoria Blessington, who drowns herself to escape her abusive husband, Sir Aubrey Blessington. A surgeon resurrects her by removing the brain from the fetus she was carrying and placing it into her skull, giving the revived Bella the mental faculties of a child. Eventually, she becomes engaged to a Glasgow physician named Archibald McCandless, she chloroforms him and runs off with a shady lawyer who takes her on an adventure in Europe. As Bella’s brain matures, she starts to develop a social conscience, but all the progress she has made is threatened when she is recognized as Victoria by her lawful husband.
Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures, which has produced all of Lanthimos’ English-language films including The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Favourite, as well as Room and Hulu’s Normal People, will produce the upcoming film.
