Was the win of “Parasite” a surprise?

To tell the truth I am not the biggest fan of Oscar Awards. I believe that the previous years, the Academy was unfair by not giving Best Picture Award to movies such as “La La Land”, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and “The Revenant”. However, this year the Academy maybe made an out-of-the-box choice by giving the Oscar to the Korean movie “Parasite”. Considering the following, this wasn’t a big surprise.

The main contender was a War movie

The truth is that the topic of World Wars – especially WW2 – has been overanalysed from the film industry worldwide. Each year there is at least one expensive war movie production that maybe can result into a descent movie, but from cinema’s evolution aspect, it can’t add something more. In the same page, Academy also seems to dislike war movies. For example, one of the most epic war movie, “Saving Private Ryan” lost Best Picture Award to “Shakespeare in Love” in 1998 and Dunkirk failed to received any major Oscar Award in 2018.

Other competition was weak

Personally, I was thinking that Quentin Tarantino had a great opportunity to win Best Picture Awardr. Once Upon a Time was a very good film with very good acting from DiCaprio and Pitt and the story was referring to Hollywood of 70’s, so it was quiet familiar to the voters of the Academy.

Sam Mendez made also a good movie as director. However, Academy has recently awarded a single shoot movie (Birdman) so it was difficult to award the same idea twice that soon. Furthermore, the rest of movie was weak; the main roles were uninterested and the scenario was also weak.

The rest of movies could be not serious contenders for different reasons; from political to low quality ones. Maybe the Academy has to rethink the increased list of nominated movies, because it includes movies that can’t stand in this level.

No new ideas

Hollywood nowadays doesn’t spend money in new ideas. This explains why Netflix had three productions to the Oscar Awards. Instead of Netflix investing money to another superhero movie, it works with new scenarios and ideas (Two Popes, Irishman, Marriage Story) and Academy rewarded the platform with a lot of nominations and one award (Laura Dern).

Bong Joon Ho was already known to “West World”

Bong Joon Ho’s Snowpiercer (2013) was one of the breakthrough movies of that year Chris Evans, an A-class Hollywood actor nowadays had the main role. Tilda Swindon, Ed Harris and Octavia Spencer were also staring along with Kang-ho Song, the father of the family in “Parasite”. The movie had office success making $86,8 million revenue with an estimated budget of $40 million. Furthermore, a series inspired from this movie is coming, starring Jennifer Connelly.

The movie was legendary.

Further to abovementioned reasons, the main reason that the movie won was that the movie was exceptional. The scenario was extremely smart, full of plot twists and you were feeling that you wanted to move forward the movie in order to see what’s next. Especially, the first 45 minutes of the movie, I think that are one of the best first parts in movie history. Directing is not something very fancy but it fully supports the scenario, as well as acting did.
